Finally, simpler and faster treatments against multidrug-resistant tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is still a scourge in many countries. Results from clinical trials of very promising treatments were revealed this week at an international conference in Paris.

Contrary to preconceived ideas, the tuberculosis is not a disease of the past. Although France is spared, it kills 1.3 million people around the world every year, mainly in countries with high levels of poverty. Nowadays, curing this disease remains a real obstacle course. Conventional treatment involves taking a cocktail of antibiotics for several months. But due to the increasing number of antibiotic-resistant forms, treatment can last up to 24 months and involve up to 23 pills a day. Developing effective and faster treatments therefore constitutes one of the major challenges for eradicating tuberculosis by 2030, according to the objectives set by the United Nations conference in September 2023 in New York.
