According to data from the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden published in November 2023, more men than women live under the age of 50 in Germany.

The proportion of the male population is highest among the group aged 18 to 29 years: there are 1,086 men per 1,000 women. One reason is that about five percent more boys are born than girls. In the age group up to 17 years, there are 1,058 boys per 1,000 girls; in the age group from 30 to 49 years, there are 1,022 men per 1,000 women.

In general, more women live in Germany than men. On average, there are 971 men per thousand women. The federal agency relies on data as of the end of 2022. The reason is demographic changes in the older age group of society, which is characterized by a higher life expectancy for women compared to men. Thus, in the group over 65 years of age there are more women than men: there are 786 men per 1000 women.

Statistics for federal states

When looking at the federal states, among young people aged 18 to 29, the largest numbers of men are found in Saxony-Anhalt (1,146 men per 1,000 women), Thuringia (1,137 men per 1,000 women) and Brandenburg (1,128 men per 1,000 women). There are fewer men than women, although only by a few, in Berlin and Hamburg. In the older age group of 50 to 64 years, the male population is larger in Thuringia, Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Brandenburg. There are also more men among foreigners living in Germany: in 2022, there were 1,000 men for every 939 women.
