Dozens of cozy huts are lined up on the lakeshore around the centuries-old lime tree in the middle of the small island in Lake Chiemsee. The unique island backdrop in the “Bavarian Sea” attracts visitors from near and far on the first two weekends of Advent.

If you are still looking for gifts, you will find a large selection here – from handmade natural pillows and original pot holders to earrings made from Christmas tree balls to hand-knitted Christmas sweaters or sheep’s milk soaps. The smell of freshly caught Chiemsee reindeer, Chiemsee bratwurst and potato soup whets your appetite.

The open-air museum becomes a Christmas market

On the first weekend of Advent, the Glentleiten open-air museum in Großweil, Upper Bavaria, near Lake Kochel is transformed into a Christmas village. The historic barns, heated rooms and stables are festively decorated and invite you to take an atmospheric stroll through the museum grounds.

The stalls only sell handmade, traditional crafts from the region, such as basketry, carvings, fur vests and blankets. The mighty Höllental Viaduct forms the unique backdrop to the Christmas market in the Ravenna Gorge near Breitnau in the Upper Black Forest. 40 exhibitors offer finely crafted handicrafts and regional specialties for the palate in the Budendorf surrounded by forest directly under the impressive drawbridge. You can get there in a relaxed manner by shuttle bus from Titisee, Hinterzarten and Himmelreich, as there are only a few parking spaces at the market.

The lantern and torchlight hike from Hinterzarten through the Töpfertal is particularly atmospheric, where the audience can also hear exciting legends and mystical stories.

It is considered one of the most traditional of its kind: The Old German Christmas market in Bad Wimpfen, Baden-Württemberg, allows past centuries to be experienced over three weekends in Advent. A particularly impressive evening tour by the night watchman is through the magical half-timbered old town, whose narrow streets create the unique flair of this market, supported by the sweet smell of baked apples, mulled wine, fir branches and gingerbread.

Glass works of art at the Kugelmarkt in Lauscha

The glassblowing town of Lauscha in the southern Thuringian Forest is the home of the glass Christmas tree ball. Since 1847 and to this day, the delicate pieces of jewelry have been handmade in numerous family businesses and exported worldwide. Of course, the Christmas tree decorations – recognized by UNESCO by being included in the list of intangible cultural heritage – are the focus of the 31st Lauscha Ball Market, which takes place on two Advent weekends.

A historic Christmas market enchants on the three Advent weekends at the Wartburg near Eisenach with a nostalgic hut village, where traders revive long-forgotten crafts – candle makers, glass blowers, robe masters, lantern makers, soap makers, stonemasons, herb women and pewter casters.

Musicians, jugglers and puppeteers also mingle with the people and create a fairytale atmosphere. Artists, bakers and craftsmen offer their wares in the historic castle courtyard. For the “road toll” that every visitor has to pay, in addition to the market in the castle courtyards, the festival hall, the museum and the famous Luther Room can also be visited.
