In response to the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of a resolution calling for urgent and extensive humanitarian pauses and outlining the need to address the situation of children in the occupied Gaza StripAgnès Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International, said:

“After four failed resolutions in the last 30 days, The UN Security Council has finally exercised the role and leadership that it is mandated to perform: the maintenance of peace and security, and the protection of the international rule of law.”.

“While the resolution is not prescriptive regarding the duration of humanitarian pauses, it is a much-needed step amidst massive suffering and repeated violations of international humanitarian law.”

“Although the United States abstained rather than voting in favor of the resolution, this is the first sign that the United States is willing to deviate from its stance of unreserved support for Israel at the UN. We ask President Biden to use all the influence of his government on Israel so that this resolution is implemented as soon as possible. We also urge all members of the UN Security Council to take all necessary measures to ensure that both sides of the conflict comply with the resolution. The children of Gaza cannot wait.

“Amnesty International has been calling for a ceasefire since October 26, and will continue to do so. A comprehensive negotiated ceasefire would end unlawful attacks by all sides, stop the rapidly rising death toll in Gaza, and allow aid agencies to bring life-saving aid, water, and medical supplies into Gaza in response. to the overwhelming levels of human suffering. A ceasefire would also provide the opportunity to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas and other armed groups since October 7.”
