Time.news – Cinecittà is a temple of world museums like the MoMA celebrate Ennio Morricone (1928-2020), one of the greatest film composers of all time, with a retrospective of more than 35 films spanning his nearly 60-year career.

Featuring more than 17 new digital restorations and archival 35mm prints, the exhibition presents a rich selection of films featuring Morricone’s most famous soundtracks (including the ‘Man with No Name Trilogy’ by Sergio Leone and ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’, ‘The Thing’ by John Carpenter, ‘The Mission’ by Roland Joffè, ‘1900’ by Bernardo Bertolucci and ‘Nuovo Cinema Paradiso’ by Giuseppe Tornatore) alongside lesser-known titles (such as ‘Navajo Joe and ‘The Great Silence’ by Sergio Corbucci, ‘The Big Shot’ by Sergio Sollima, ‘Danger: Diabolik’ by Mario Bava and ‘The Red Tent by Mikhail Kalatozov).

A rare German television program from 1967 shows Morricone himself performing as part of the Nuova Consonanza Improvisation Group (“Il Gruppo”), a radically experimental collective of composers and musicians who came together in Rome in 1964 in a spirit of non-hierarchical improvisation. Morricone’s ingenious combination of classical instrumentation with new electronic technologies, concrete and jazz music, seriality and noise was also reflected in his composition for the cinema.

His conscious use of harmonicas, pan flutes, bells, twang guitars, drums and, above all, the human voice and the whistle, revolutionized the music of popular genre cinema, from westerns to horror, from operatic comedy to melodrama , and continues to influence contemporary composers and musicians such as Hans Zimmer, Angelo Badalamenti, Radiohead, John Zorn, Mica Levi, Jay-Z and Metallica.

Joshua Siegel, curator del MoMA Film Departmentstates: “This Ennio Morricone retrospective is the largest MoMA has ever dedicated to a film composer. In just five notes – the echoing whistle of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly – Morricone secured his place alongside Beethoven composing one of the greatest opening themes in the history of Western music. But, as this retrospective of nearly 40 films illustrates, Morricone was capable of much more and his versatility is the result of a successful debut in musical experimentation of avant-garde”.

Nicola Maccanico, CEO of Cinecittà, proudly announces an important tribute to the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, a prestigious partner for many years. “This tribute is dedicated to the uniqueness of Ennio Morricone, iconic Maestro, whose musical compositions have been a source of inspiration for countless generations. As part of this tribute, we are thrilled to present the 4K restoration of Giuseppe Tornatore’s masterpiece, ‘ Nuovo Cinema Paradiso’, together with his latest documentary, ‘Ennio’. These presentations are in line with Cinecittà’s core mission: to preserve timeless classics and promote contemporary cinematic art, while offering a creative hub where talented artists can make their dreams come true and share them with audiences around the world.”
