Mysterious respiratory illness sickens, kills dogs in multiple U.S. states
A troubling and mysterious respiratory illness has been spreading among dogs in several U.S. states, causing concern among pet owners and veterinarians. The severe pneumonia-like illness has left some dogs dead and has sickened many others, leading authorities to encourage dog owners to take caution and limit their pets’ contact with other dogs.
The illness starts with a cough and progressively worsens, with symptoms including coughing, sneezing, discharge from the eyes or nose, trouble breathing, and fatigue. According to the Oregon Department of Agriculture, dogs with these symptoms may test negative for common causes of respiratory illnesses, making it more challenging to diagnose and treat.
Health officials believe that the illness is most likely transmitted through contact with other dogs, with dog parks, kennels, and groomers being particularly risky locations. Several states, including Oregon, Colorado, New Hampshire, California, Indiana, Illinois, Washington, Idaho, Georgia, and Florida, have reported confirmed cases that match the description of the illness.
Dog owners are advised to promptly seek veterinary care if their dog exhibits any of the described symptoms. Veterinarians also recommend ensuring that dogs are up to date with necessary vaccinations as a precautionary measure.
While caution is advised, experts emphasize the importance of seeking veterinary care as soon as symptoms are spotted. They also provided additional tips to protect dogs from respiratory illnesses, including reducing contact with other dogs, avoiding communal water bowls, and keeping sick dogs at home.
In addition, the Oregon Department of Agriculture outlined three categories in which observed cases have fallen, ranging from prolonged mild-moderate tracheobronchitis to acute pneumonia with severe and often fatal outcomes.
Dog owners are urged to contact their veterinarian before exposing their pets to environments with multiple other dogs and to remain vigilant for any potential symptoms. The spread of this illness is a serious concern, and pet owners are advised to take all necessary precautions to protect their furry friends.
