Leipzig – The Croatian conductor Ivan Repušić is to become the new general music director of the Leipzig Opera. As the opera announced on Wednesday in Leipzig, Repušić will take up his position in the 2025/26 season. He is the successor to Ulf Schirmer, who was general music director from 2009 and artistic director of the opera from 2011.

Repušić, born in 1978, is currently chief conductor of the Munich Radio Orchestra, first permanent guest conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and designated chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Weimar. In Zagreb, the Croatian studied conducting with Igor Gjadrov and Vjekoslav Sutej. In the past, guest engagements have taken him to, for example, the New National Theater in Tokyo.

According to the information, Repušić was suggested by director Tobias Wolff. The Croatian’s ideas “for the further development of the opera and his excellent contacts in the international scene of excellent singers are a real asset for our management team.” Wolff has been artistic director of the Leipzig Opera since August 2022. After the completion of a selection process, the cultural sites operating committee of the city of Leipzig will officially appoint Repušić as the new general music director at the end of November.
