Earthquake in sight in the audiovisual sector? A skirmish taking place in the European Parliament over geoblocking threatens to shake up the entire sector. In the name of a vision of an audiovisual market without any barriers between member countries, certain MEPs attack one of the pillars of the cultural exception and the functioning of the market for films, series and sports rights: the territoriality of the access to works. Today, only residents of France can subscribe to Canal+ France, the same thing in other countries. This is what could change. On October 25, the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) committee of the European Parliament thus adopted by a large majority a text calling for a “complete review of the regulation on geoblocking by by 2025 at the latest, with particular attention to the inclusion of audiovisual services in the scope. This project must be examined in plenary in the coming weeks.
