For admission to university, an internship abroad or to assess your language level and promote it on the job market, there are different types of assessment available near you. American or British test, written or oral, general or specialized English, here is a small inventory.

TOEFL and TOEIC: American tests

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a written and oral assessment test administered by the American organization ETS. It mainly aims to assess linguistic knowledge in a university context. Often essential to integrate American or Canadian universities. The computerized version, Internet-based test (iBT) is the most widespread. It assesses the four main skills: comprehension and expression, written and oral. Valid for a period of two years, it costs around €232. Most universities require a minimum of 90 points for their selection in the IBT version and 110 points for the most highly rated universities.

The Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) is a written and oral assessment, also administered by the ETS organization. It tests language knowledge in a professional context, without being technical. Recognized by most schools in France, it is especially popular with businesses. Valid for two years, it costs between €95 and €131 depending on the plan chosen; a 1h30 MCQ in the Bridge version, a comprehension assessment for the Listening and Reading version or an expression assessment for the Speaking and Writing version.

IELTS and Cambridge: the British tests

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the leading English language exams administered by the British Council and the University of Cambridge. Recommended for joining a university or finding a job, particularly in the United Kingdom or Australia, IELTS is available in academic or general version. Very popular in higher education, this exam is also the most requested in immigration. It allows you to obtain a visa in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom or Australia. Without limit of validity, it determines understanding and expression, both orally and in writing. The exam is graded from 1 (non-user) to 9 (expert user) and costs approximately €235.

The University of Cambridge also organizes its language level assessment tests. It offers a multitude of exams depending on age, specialty and level. Recognized by a large number of universities around the world, the Cambridge English exams deliver diplomas corresponding to the six levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ​​(rated from A1 to C2). It makes it easy to communicate your level. The different exams (First Certificate in English – FCE, Certificate in Advanced in English – CAE, Certificate of Proficiency in English – CPE) cost from 223 to 255€ and their scores are between 80 (the lowest) and 230 (the highest). pupil). They have no validity limit. They assess both written and oral, comprehension and expression, computerized or on paper, except oral expression which is evaluated by a teacher.
