After taking and swearing in his position as President before the King, Pedro Sánchez began his new mandate this afternoon. The investiture, which went ahead yesterday, was communicated to Felipe VI by the president of Congress, Armengol, in a meeting that consolidated the support of 179 votes in favor in the Congress of Deputies. However, the statements of Santos Cerdán, secretary of the PSOE organization, for Navarra Television, have generated growing controversy due to citizen discontent over the PSOE’s agreements with pro-independence parties to form a Government. In particular, the pact includes an amnesty law for events related to the illegal referendum in Catalonia.
Cerdán defended the agreement, stating that “it has not been in danger at any time” and highlighted the “discretion” in the negotiations with Junt x Cat that have been carried out “from the shadows” since March, before the regional elections. These statements portray the contradictions of the PSOE itself with respect to its previous position of not reaching an agreement with the independentists. While in the electoral campaign they assured that they were not going to agree with these groups and that the amnesty was not part of their plans because it was “unconstitutional”, behind the backs of the Spanish citizens and their voters they were already negotiating the agreements. These statements have generated criticism on social networks, with users accusing the party of changing its position for political convenience and questioning the transparency of the decisions made.
In addition to the statements about the agreement with independentists, Cerdán addressed the PSOE’s relationship with Podemos. Given the rumors of tensions between both parties, Cerdán clarified that “We can be part of the SUMAR coalition” and that “no representative of Podemos has been vetoed.” Uncertainties about the distribution of ministerial portfolios in the SUMAR coalition persist, generating expectations about who will be the Podemos representatives in the new Government.
In this context, a highly unstable government legislature can be seen. The variability in political alliances and ideological divergences anticipate an unpredictable stage, where the duration of the mandate could range between the traditional four years and the possibility of a government crisis that could significantly shorten it, posing an uncertain political scenario for the coming months.
