The new ‘Xplora Space’ inaugurated by Ibercaja at its headquarters in Zaragoza, houses in the anteroom of the Patio de la Infanta, a planter made with pieces obtained from the recycling 25,000 credit cardswhich serves as the basis for a mantle of plants that crowns this iconic figure.

This element of sustainable decorationdenominated “garden of cards”, was born from the collaboration of Ibercaja and the technology group Giesecke+Devrient (G+D), a provider of payment solutions, including cards, whose commitment to circular economy has made him a reference in sustainability and recycling.

With this initiative, Ibercaja gives a second life to 25,000 cards that, instead of being discarded, have been transformed into large pieces, similar to the iconic “Lego” cards, manufactured by the company CM Plastik. For its part, the gardening work has been carried out by Gardeniers, the socio-labor insertion project of Atades, which provides work for people with functional diversity and intellectual disabilities.

According to Nacho Torre, director of Marketing and digital strategy at Ibercaja, “This flower pot is a symbol of Ibercaja’s commitment to the circular economy and sustainability, which is also present in the remodeling of the facilities to convert them into the Xplora Space, a meeting point for all citizens”.

Echoing this sentiment, David González, ePayments sales director at G+D, commented: “We are very happy to have collaborated with Ibercaja on this challenge. This planter is a reminder of the importance of sustainability in all of our operations and reflects our commitment to developing environmentally sustainable and creative solutions for our customers.”.

It is worth remembering that in Spain there are more than 80 million cards in circulation and their recycling represents one of the challenges that the banking sector must address. G+D has been a pioneer in our country in recycling projects for banking entities and this project for Ibercaja is another example of its commitment to developing personalized solutions that allow for Second life to bank cards.

G+D has for years had a line of environmentally friendly payment cards, unique in the industry, manufactured with 100% sustainable materials. Likewise, and within its ESG strategy (Environment, Social, Governance), G+D is committed to eliminating the use of virgin plastic in its card production by 2030.
