China has launched what it claims is the world’s first ultra-high-speed Internet backbone, supporting a bandwidth of 1.2 Terabits per second, exceeding typical global Internet speeds.

This technology has been developed through a collaboration between Tsinghua University, the China Mobile company, the technology company Huawei and the research provider Cernet.com Corporation, who shared the project at a press conference held at the University from Tsinghua.

As detailed by Xinhua News and reported by Tsinghua University in a statement, the “next generation” Internet backbone has already been launched and covers more than 3,000 kilometers, thus linking the Chinese cities of Beijing, Wuhan and Canton .

Thus, as they have stressed, it is a technological achievement framed in the national Future Internet Technology Infrastructure (FITI) project. In this sense, after carrying out several infrastructure tests, which began on July 31, the FITI backbone network has been implemented in a stable and reliable manner.

Todo ‘made in China’

In addition, they have detailed that this backbone network is based on China’s own developed technology, emphasizing the ultra-high-speed IPv6 interface used by the central Internet router, capable of reaching speeds of 1.2 Terabits per second. In fact, even the ‘software’ and ‘hardware’ necessary for the operation of the new Internet backbone are manufactured in China.

Following this line, during the conference Tsinghua University also explained that the central nodes of the backbone network are distributed in 40 universities in 35 cities throughout the country.

For his part, as reported by other media such as the South China Morning Post, the vice president of Huawei Technologies, Wang Lei, added that the network is capable of allowing the download of data equivalent to 150 high-definition movies in a single second.

Likewise, the director of the FITI project and member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Wu Jianping, has stated that this ultra-fast Internet network provides China with “advanced technology to build an even faster Internet.”
