This November 17 marks 56 years since NASA’s Surveyor 6 spacecraft made the first takeoff from the surface of the Moon. rehearsal for the later manned Apollo spacecraft.

Surveyor 6 landed on November 10 in Sinus Medii, in the center of the visible hemisphere of the Moon. He set about obtaining post-landing television images, determining the abundance of chemical elements in the lunar soil, obtaining landing dynamics data, obtaining thermal and radar reflectivity data, and conducting an erosion experiment.

In another test of space technology, Surveyor 6’s engines were restarted and ran for 2.5 seconds on the first lunar liftoff on November 17 at 10:32 UTC. This created 150 pounds of thrust and lifted the vehicle 4 meters from the lunar surface.

After move west 2.5 metersthe spacecraft once again successfully soft-landed and continued to function as designed. Their mission ended on the first lunar night.
