‘Daughter of the Moon’, tribute or homage to Mecano?

Delighted, we left the Euskalduna this Friday after the two-hour tribute concert that the Sevillians ‘Hija de la Luna’ gave to Mecano, this time focusing on their fifth LP, ‘Descanso dominical’, the best-selling in Spain in 1988, which placed a million copies during the first year. The undersigned believes that his is not a tribute concert, but the namesake Esteban, more ‘mechanical’, assures that it is: “they dress the same as them, she dances like Ana Torroja and the versions are faithful.”

Hum… One could disagree: there is an infallible way to detect tribute groups, and that is that they go slower than the originals, whether they are ZZ Top or Dire Straits. And these ‘Daughter of the Moon’ go at the right speed and even in the most accelerated numbers they withstand the pull, for example in the dynamic ‘Makeup’: ‘don’t look at me, don’t look at me, don’t me, don’t me, don’t me look, leave it alone…’ The cadence of a tribute group would be something like: don’t watch me, don’t watch me…

Another reason for joy was that ‘Daughter of the Moon’ multiplied attendance by six compared to their first concert in Bilbao: in August 2021, under pandemic conditions, the Miribilla pavilion seemed even more immense because we still didn’t even reach 222 souls present at their concert on the Andalusians’ first tour, focused on Mecano’s sixth and last album, ‘Aidalai’ (1991). That Thursday in August, 17 songs (including a medley) were played in 103 minutes with tickets at 33 euros. This Friday, about 1,400 spectators gathered at the Euskalduna, with tickets between 39 and 49 euros, and it seems that there was a higher male percentage than in Miribilla. In fact, the leader of the Sevillian quintet, Robin Torres, actress, singer and dancer, formerly of La Voz 2015, asked this Friday for the girls to raise their hands, then the boys, and surprisedly stated that women are generally the vast majority in their concerts. .

The Miribilla 2021 show, reinforced with two screens and distorted by the low attendance, was good, but the Euskalduna 2023 show was very good, with a very similar repertoire but with greater brilliance in the execution (two more years giving concerts in Europe and America is worn by the Sevillians), and with the added enthusiasm provided by the happy and participatory crowd during their great concert of 20 songs (including a medley) in 118 minutes in which Robin Torres showed the affections of a television presenter, she changed details of the costumes while maintaining a clear homogeneity, he acted as a barracks charlatan (for example when he said that among those present who entered the social networks there would be a raffle for a ‘meet & greet’, that is, a visit to the dressing room to meet the musicians at the end of the show), he repeated even in seven times the request to his technicians to “enlighten the public.”

Then in the encore, when he had asked the 1,400 attendees to turn on the lights on their cell phones, he came off the stage to walk around the stalls shaking hands and bumping into each other while singing ‘It’s so hard for me to forget you’, and in general he was the same. as flattering with the countryman as an Andalusian flamenco: at first she praised the gastronomy and in the end she considered staying to live in Bilbao and cheered: “family, you are wonderful, you are loved…”.

The sound of Euskalduna was good (although at first it sounded saturated by the volume and at some point the drums echoed), the musicians know and master the repertoire and made it come out lively (not opaque and slowed down like a vulgar tribute group would do ), Robin Torres was happy with the numerical quantity and the partying predisposition of the fans, and the most famous songs, the most difficult to cover, were recreated with surprising verisimilitude, naturalness and emotionality.

level performance

Let’s review the most astonishing ones: ‘Daughter of the Moon’ was rhythmic and dramatic, the very sensitive and ethereal ‘Aire’ was one of the peaks of the event, ‘Woman against Woman’ was unbeatable, ‘One More Year’ was another peak, at the same as the next one, ‘Cruz de navajas’, and the medley was awkward and extensive (with ‘The curves of that girl’, ‘Lost in my room’, ‘Oh, how heavy’, ‘I can’t get up today’ , and none more, right?), the most frivolous and youthful ones worked equally well, and we are referring to the aforementioned ‘Makeup’ and the also top ‘I snuck into a party’, and already in the encore they embroidered in duet the solemn, liturgical ‘Stay in Madrid’, they did not slow down in ‘It costs me so much to forget you’ (when he walked through the audience), and ‘Barco a Venus’ served as a high-profile goodbye.

We have foolishly mentioned 11 of the 20 topics, you see what a high level. Robin Torroja once said: “now one of the most beautiful songs that exist, and I dedicate it to you, thank you for buying our tickets and keeping the world of music alive”, and he excelled with ‘Mujer contra mujer ‘. The truth is that none of them were weak: not ‘Laika’, not ‘Eungenio Salvador Dalí’, not…

She knew how to move around the stage and offer extra things (a chair, sitting on the steps of her musicians’ platform, a stool, an accordion player at her side, then a guitarist, at first wearing an Antarctic coat, then a ghostly hood for ‘This cemetery is not serious’…), the repertoire was missing a famous song from the LP ‘Descanso dominical’ such as ‘There is no march in New York’, and when saying goodbye the Sevillian proposed: «Shall we see you next year? Oh, I forgot: the winner of the ‘meet & greet’ is Saioa Pradas, I don’t know if I said it correctly. When you leave, go to the merchandising stand, a stand where they sold everything from CDs to T-shirts…

‘Daughter of the Moon’ did well this Friday and they will surely attract even more audiences next year. Enlighten me…
