Alarming Discovery: New Subline of Corona Variant Could Be More Contagious

As of November 19, 2023, a new subline of the Pirola variant of the coronavirus has been discovered, raising concerns about its potentially increased contagiousness. This subline, known as JN.1, has been reported in over eleven countries, including the USA and Great Britain.

Researchers and health authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with Kelly Oakson, a senior bioinformatics scientist at the Utah Public Health Laboratory, calling the new strain “alarming.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the USA reported that the variant first appeared in September 2023 and is possibly more contagious than its predecessor.

While there is no evidence that JN.1 causes different symptoms than previous corona variants, it is a sub-variant of the Omicron variant, so symptoms such as sore throat, body aches, difficulty breathing, fever, and cough are possible, according to the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

In Germany, the Robert Koch Institute reported that the Eris variant is responsible for almost 43 percent of current infections, with only 7 percent attributed to the Pirola variant and its JN.1 subline. Virologist Christian Drosten has reassured the public, stating that there is no evidence of serious illness associated with the new subline.

Experts emphasize the inevitability of new variants of the coronavirus, likening it to any other endemic respiratory virus. Although the HV.1 subline of the Eris variant is becoming more common, there are no signs of severe disease progression associated with it, according to specialists at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Colorado.

As the world continues to grapple with the ongoing pandemic, the discovery of new variants serves as a reminder of the need for continued vigilance and the importance of public health measures in preventing the spread of the virus.]
