The Israeli army said on Sunday that it had discovered a 55 meter long tunnel used according to it “for terrorism” under the al-Chifa hospital in Gaza, which it has been searching since Wednesday November 15 to find a Hamas military base.
This tunnel is ten meters deep, the army said, while dozens of patients are still in this hospital complex, the largest in the Gaza Strip, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). .
A hospital besieged by Israel
“A steep staircase leads to the entrance to the tunnel” equipped with several means of defense including an armored door, explained the army in a press release. “This type of gate is used by Hamas terrorists to prevent Israeli forces from entering command centers.”
The tunnel was discovered in an area of the hospital under a hangar containing weapons, including “grenade launchers, explosives and Kalashnikov rifles”, she added, adding that soldiers continued to advance into the underground.
Israeli forces have besieged the hospital since Wednesday, leading to the evacuation of a large number of its patients. The army claims that the Islamist Hamas movement has a hideout there, which the movement denies.
