They didn’t even leave any crumbs for their rivals. By beating Iceland (2-0) on Sunday evening in Lisbon, Portugal closed its qualifying phase for Euro 2024 with a 10th victory in as many matches. Bruno Fernandes (37th) and the incoming Ricardo Horta (66th) allowed the Seleçao to validate their “Grand Slam” in group J. More than these 10 successes, acquired against lesser teams (Slovakia, Luxembourg, Iceland , Bosnia-Herzegovina and Liechtenstein), the Portuguese statistics are impressive: they have scored 36 goals and conceded only two.

They thus managed two cards against Luxembourg (6-0 and 9-0), although they were honorable third in this group upon arrival. Only Slovakia gave the Portuguese a hard time (3-2) in October, but they escaped with a double from the indefatigable Cristiano Ronaldo. CR7 was still the starter (and captain) on Sunday evening, and should continue to lead the Lusitanian selection during the next Euro in Germany.

Portugal is also the only nation to have achieved a full success during these qualifications… while waiting for the French team. With a perfect record (in a group with one team less), with 7 wins, 27 goals scored and only one conceded, the Blues could match this performance if they beat Greece on Tuesday evening in Athens.
