CWZ, Prostate Cancer Foundation, and Marikenhuis to Hold Theme Evening on Prostate Cancer

NIJMEGEN – The Canisius-Wilhelmina Hospital (CWZ) will be organizing a theme evening on prostate cancer in collaboration with the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Marikenhuis. The event is scheduled for Monday, November 20, at the Marikenhuis located at Slotemaker de Bruïnweg 163 in Nijmegen from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Admission is free and those interested can register via www.marikenhuis.nl. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions, which can also be submitted in advance when registering.

The evening will focus on timely detection, current diagnostics, and potential future treatment options for metastatic prostate cancer. Speakers include an expert by experience who will share about living with metastatic prostate cancer, nurse specialist in urology Joost de Baaij who will discuss the detection and investigation of prostate cancer, as well as new biopsy techniques, and oncologist Marieke Berends who will provide insight into the current treatment options for metastatic prostate cancer and what the future holds.

According to statistics, in 2022, prostate cancer was diagnosed 14,649 times, averaging 38 diagnoses per day. This number continues to rise annually, with 10% of those diagnosed being under the age of 60. Alarmingly, 1 in 5 men diagnosed with prostate cancer already have the cancer spread at the time of diagnosis, despite experiencing few symptoms. More than 3,000 men lose their lives to prostate cancer each year, prompting discussions about screening and population research. However, there is hope as curative treatment can often be pursued, and even in cases of metastases, men can live for a prolonged period with new treatment methods and a reasonable quality of life.

The theme evening offers an opportunity for individuals to learn more about the current state of prostate cancer, treatment options, and future developments in the field. It also provides a platform for attendees to engage with experts, ask questions, and gain a better understanding of this prevalent and impactful health issue.]
