After publicly supporting candidate Sergio Massa and suggesting that Javier Milei would lead Argentina to fascism, President Gustavo Petro regretted the result of the presidential elections in that country and said it was a “sad moment for Latin America.”

“The extreme right has won in Argentina; It is the decision of your society. Sad for Latin America and we will see… neoliberalism no longer has a proposal for society, it cannot respond to humanity’s current problems,” said the head of state through X.

The comment comes as a new bad move by Petro in diplomatic terms, since it is usual for the leaders of each country to recognize the victory of the elected presidents to ensure a good start to binational relations.

Despite that, Petro chose a contrary tone and preferred to continue criticizing Milei, as he had already done last week through his social networks.

A few days before the second presidential round in Argentina, President Gustavo Petro spoke about the two candidates who would face each other this November 19 and compared them, saying that one would bring “hope” and the other “barbarism.”

“In Argentina, not only the future of its people is decided, but also the hope of America. Hope or barbarism is the decision of the Argentines. A Milei that returns us to Pinochet and Videla. Or a Massa who can open paths of hope. Have no doubts. You should never vote for barbarism and you should always vote for hope,” said the president in obvious support for Massa, the big loser of this day.

And it was not the only pronouncement that today could put him in trouble with the elected president of Argentina, or at least cause the bilateral relationship to not begin on the best of terms. During the first round, when Massa and Milei passed, the head of state also celebrated that the far-right had not managed to win in the first round.

“Argentina defeated barbarism. It is the hour of hope. You choose between barbarism and hope. Congratulations to the Argentine people,” Petro had said.

Despite the tone he chose today, the president spoke again in a message in which he recognized and even congratulated Milei on the election results. “The relations between Colombia and Argentina, the ties between their peoples will be maintained in mutual respect. I congratulate Milei. And we expect from the progressive Argentine the assessments that allow the Latin American people to learn from the lessons of history,” he said.

For now, Milei’s victory is official and even his opponent admitted defeat and I wish him luck for the upcoming government.

“The results are not what we expected. I have contacted Javier Milei to congratulate him and to wish him luck because he is the president that the majority of Argentines elected for the next four years,” Massa said this Sunday before his militants.
