New Pirola Subline Could Be More Contagious Than Its Predecessor, Researchers Say

As the coronavirus continues to mutate, a new subline of the Pirola variant has caught the attention of researchers, with concerns that it may be more contagious than its predecessor. The sub-variant, known as JN.1, has been discovered in over eleven countries, primarily in the USA and Great Britain, prompting alarm from experts.

First appearing in the USA in September 2023, the US health authority CDC has reported that there are indications that JN.1 could be “possibly more contagious,” according to Professor Thomas Russo, who discovered the new variant. However, it is not yet possible to determine whether JN.1 will spread given the limited data available.

While there is no evidence that JN.1 causes different symptoms than previous corona variants, it does pose a potential risk of increased contagion due to its status as a sub-variant of the Omicron variant. Symptoms such as sore throat, body aches, difficulty breathing, fever, and cough are possible.

In Germany, the Pirola variant, including its JN.1 subline, does not currently appear to be establishing itself. Most infections in the country are due to the Eris Corona variant, with only a small percentage attributed to Pirola. Virologist Christian Drosten has also provided reassurance, stating that there is no evidence of serious illness associated with the Pirola variant.

As experts continue to observe new corona mutations, such as the HV.1 subline of the Eris variant, infectious disease specialists emphasize the inevitability of new variants of Sars-CoV-2. While there is no indication of severe disease progression in the case of HV.1, researchers remain vigilant in monitoring the ongoing evolution of the virus.]
