Tester has raised nearly $20 million for his re-election, ranking sixth among Senate candidates nationwide for fundraising, a fact that has made him vulnerable to attack from critics who label him a Washington insider.
Despite his fundraising efforts, Tester is adamant that the money hasn’t changed him and that he still takes his cues from the veterans in his state. His strong support for veterans resonates in Montana, where one in seven citizens is a veteran.
While Tester has managed to win reelection in close races in the past, opponents are highlighting his ties to lobbyists in ad campaigns as an attempt to undermine his authenticity. Even with Montana politics turning more conservative, Tester’s reputation as a moderate has allowed him to win primary votes in the past.
