7 out of 10 Greeks live at home with their parents, according to Eurostat, with an average age of 30.7 years.

Owning a home and an independent wallet is a dream for most young people today, the average age at which a young person in our country manages to leave the children’s room of their parents’ house exceeds 30 years, while the European average is 26 ,5 years.

In more detail, 7 out of 10 Greeks aged 18-34 – the majority of them men – according to a recent Eurostat survey, live with their parents when the corresponding average in the list of 26 EU countries does not exceed 49.4%.

The reasons that keep young people “trapped” in their children’s rooms

The difficult equation for young women and men who want to but can’t spread their wings includes high rents and fixed costs, expensive goods and low wages.

“It’s hard to rent where rents have gone, they’re going to need cuts from other things,” they say.

Greece is second in the list of European countries with the highest percentage of young people living under the same roof as their parents. And how could it be different when they are asked to pay only for rent about 60-70% of their monthly earnings.

Even the studio apartments are worth several hundred euros

The rental cost in half of the houses in Attica (48.2%) exceeds 500 euros per month, while even for small apartments up to 50 sq.m. prices start from 400 euros.

Living together with their partner or with friendly people is a solution for many young people.

The road to the autonomy of adulthood has become difficult in Greece and for those who follow it, it is most likely that they will have to suffer deprivations even in the basic needs of their everyday life.
