DECRYPTION – With an aging population, France is widely confronted with vision problems. Fortunately, over the last ten years, ophthalmology has explored promising avenues, particularly for pathologies previously considered incurable.

It is obvious! Sight is the first of our five senses, the most precious too, because it is today threatened by our lifestyles and an unfavorable environment everywhere on the planet. Do we know, for example, that 2.2 billion humans are visually impaired, or even blind, according to estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO)?

If they are less serious, other developments are also problematic: 2.6 billion people are myopic, a figure which could double by 2050. France is not spared. Like other countries, it is experiencing a real epidemic of myopia. Due to its aging population, it is also recording increasing numbers of cases of presbyopia, cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The observation is worrying, but far from being despairing: because over the last ten years, ophthalmology has made giant strides. With, at the end of the day, promising avenues for pathologies previously considered incurable.
