New Dengue Fever Vaccine Shows Promise in Preventing Severe Infection

As cases of dengue fever continue to rise, a new vaccine has shown promising results in preventing severe infection. Dengue fever is a debilitating illness caused by infection with the dengue virus, which is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. The virus has four strains, and it can lead to severe illness and hospitalization.

Two types of dengue vaccines are currently available – CYD-TDV (Dengvaxia) and TDV (Qdenga). Both vaccines are live-attenuated, meaning they are made from a weakened form of the virus. According to Asst. Prof. (Special) Dr. Watsamon Chandrabenjakul, M.D. of Chulalongkorn Hospital, the efficacy results of the study at 25 months after vaccination showed that CYD-TDV prevented symptomatic infection in 65% of cases, prevented hospital admission in 80% of cases, and prevented severe infection in 93% of cases. Meanwhile, TDV prevented symptomatic infection in 80% of cases and prevented hospital admission in 90% of cases at 12 months after injection.

One key difference between the two vaccines is the age range for vaccination. CYD-TDV is approved for individuals aged 6-45 years, while TDV is approved for those aged 4-60 years. Additionally, TDV is the only vaccine that can be administered to those who have never had dengue fever without the need for a blood test.

It’s important to note that individuals who have never had dengue fever should consult a doctor and have a blood test before getting the injection. Dr. Chandrabenjakul also advised that both vaccines have proven to be effective for preventing severe infection and that they offer hope in the fight against dengue fever.

These new vaccines could make a significant impact on public health, especially in regions where dengue fever is prevalent. With the ongoing threat of dengue fever, the development and availability of effective vaccines are crucial in preventing severe illness and saving lives.]
