This Monday, the Burkina Faso Army carried out a series of attacks against a “large base” of alleged terrorists located in the center-east of the country and in which ha neutralized dozens of them within the framework of an increase in insecurity in the country due to the presence of the Islamic State and Al Qaeda.

This offensive took place in response to an assault against a post of the country’s security forces in Kongloré, in the province of Koulpélogo (center-east), according to the Burkinabe news agency AIB.

Apart from the activity of terrorist groups, insecurity in the country has also contributed to the increase in intercommunity violence, which is why self-defense groups have flourished to whom the Burkinabe Government has added ‘volunteers’. The deterioration of security has caused a wave of internally displaced persons and refugees to other countries in the region.

Burkina Faso, ruled by a military junta since the January 2022 coup against then-president Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, has seen increased insecurity since 2015. The junta is now headed by Ibrahim Traoré, who starred in September an uprising that was considered a ‘palace coup’ against the until then leader, Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba.
