EDITED – Who can validly deny that the gigantic gas field in the Mediterranean, off the coast of Palestine, is at the center of the war currently raging between Israel and Hamas?
A little reminder of the facts.
This is what the situation was, a few weeks before the killings of October 7, 2023, followed by IDF reprisals (still in progress), also followed by Hamas responses, a combination which means that, indeed, today, we can speak of “war” regarding this conflict in the Middle East, which has lasted for 75 years.
Gaza Marine is the name given to this deposit which was discovered in 1999 in Palestinian territorial waters. It would contain more than 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
The exploitation of Gaza Marine could represent an annual income of between 700 and 800 million dollarsaccording to the site Middle East Eye.
Seven months before the conflict in the Middle East was reignited, Israel and the Palestinian Authority resumed discussions on the exploitation of Gaza Marine. And Egypt had offered to play a pivotal role.
Furthermore, the exploitation of Gaza Marine is a subject integrated into broader political and security talks between the two parties. Negotiations resumed under pressure from the United States, during two regional summits, in February, in Aqaba (Jordan), and in March, in Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt).
Obviously, these talks were unsuccessful.
The evacuation of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip would indeed be Israel’s objective to definitively resolve “the Palestinian question” in its entirety, both with regard to the total control (political and military) of the Hebrew State. on the occupied territories, that an exploitation of Gaza Marine which would then fall to it. While with regard to maritime law and international law, Gaza Marine being in Palestinian territorial waters, its operation falls to the Palestinian Authority. We must still confer on the Palestinian Authority the quality of a State… which Israel refuses to recognize, one does not wonder why…
