O Senate approved, with 48 votes in favor and 20 against, this Tuesday, the 21st, the special calendar for processing the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution (PEC) that limits the powers of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Parliamentarians reached an agreement to vote on the PEC this Wednesday, 22nd, in two rounds. The amendment limits monocratic decisions and requests for review by STF ministers, with the exception of decisions involving serious urgency or risk of irreparable damage during the Judiciary’s recess. When voting in favor of the special calendar for voting on the proposal, the senator Carlos Portinho (PL-RJ) stated that “it is necessary to make it clear that there is no special feeling in this project and nor could there be”. According to the parliamentarian, the favorable vote is to meet society’s desire for legal certainty. “Monocratic decisions can often be precise, but it is important that they are validated by the entire committee.” The PT leader, Fabiano Contarato (PT-ES), advised the party’s parliamentarians to vote against, but stated that at an “opportune moment”, that is, in this Wednesday’s vote, he will take a position on the reason. Like the PT, the MDB considers that voting on this PEC “is not convenient” at this time and, therefore, advised the vote against the calendar.
