The Minister for Climate Action of the Generalitat, David Mascort, has announced a fourth aid package for agriculture due to the drought situation. He said this in a press conference after the Executive Council, in which he announced that the Ter-Llobregat system enters a state of pre-emergency due to drought, a measure that will affect around 5.9 million Catalans.
Mascort recalled that with the third aid package the Generalitat had added 120 million euros allocated to agriculture and that with this one it is already 160, which means 40 million more. This fourth package will be negotiated with the farmers during the Agricultural Table convened for next week and it will include the vineyard, as well as it will be studied whether it should also add the olive tree.
On future measures in a more severe drought situation, he explained that restrictions for agriculture during the state of emergency are 80%and that some areas already experienced it during the summer.
Big factories
Asked about the factories’ consumption, Mascort said that large Catalan companies “have been making efforts for a long time” to reduce water consumption and that many have already presented their savings plan in which they reduce consumption by 25%, 30% and 40%. “It’s not a competition between sectors, it’s a country issue,” he said after thanking the primary sector for its efforts following the drought restrictions.
