On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the first ‘Twilight’ film, director Catherine Hardwicke looks back on Robert Pattinson’s transformation. His first impression wasn’t very promising, she admits. “When he came to my house he had dyed black hair and was out of shape because he hung around cafes all the time,” Hardwicke recalled.
But the chemistry between Pattinson and co-star Kristen Stewart (33) was incredible, so the director was convinced. She forwarded images of the two to the Summit team, who immediately expressed concern about her choice. “They called me back and said, ‘Do you think you can make this guy look good?’ I said, ‘Yes, I can. Did you see his cheekbones? We’re doing a makeover. We do his hair, he goes to work out and he turns out beautiful,’” says Hardwicke. “But they didn’t believe it at first. I mean, he went there in a stained shirt.” A complete makeover was necessary, “from his hairstyle to his eyebrows and even his teeth”. “He started working with a trainer and put a lot of effort into it.”
Pattinson’s hairstyle was the biggest challenge, according to the director. She had imagined Edward with long locks because she loved men with long hair. However, Pattinson was absolutely not in favor of that. “We had extensions installed on him, but he hated them. He responded, “No! No! Don’t torture me!’”
