Despite a flawless performance so far, the French under-17 team suffered a big scare off the field. The cause ? The presence in the squad of young Yanis Issoufou, left winger from Montpellier, who had his first minutes in Ligue 1 against Nantes (0-2, October 22). Indeed, the Héraultais, author of two assists during the group stage, played in the UFOA B tournament in June 2022 with Niger. A West African qualifying competition for the U17 CAN and the U17 World Cup.

Called up in October 2022 with the French U17 team, the Montpellier player then opted for the young French selections, playing 14 games in this category and 4 with the U18s since September. All without this posing any problem. However, Burkina Faso has noticed the shortcomings of the French federation.

France heard by Fifa

Defeated by France in the opening (0-3, November 12), the Bleuets’ first opponent lodged a complaint after discovering that the transfer of Yannis Issoufou had not been made and validated by Fifa. As a result, the French delegation had to explain the case of a young tricolor, before explaining the reasons for this imbroglio, probably due to an error or an oversight.

As a precaution, the player does not appear on the match sheet for the round of 16 against Senegal, while waiting for FIFA and the FFF to definitively resolve the matter. A quick outcome could thus allow a return to the group for the rest of the competition.

Thus, the fate of Jean-Luc Vannuchi’s Bleuets, who won in Group E with 3 victories without conceding any goals, is not weakened. And the French delegation received assurances of this from the international organization. For the appeal to have been valid, Burkina Faso would have had to file it five days before the start of the competition.
