The whole of Eure-et-Loir is marching on its heads this Wednesday morning, as part of a national operation. More than sixty municipalities in the department woke up upside down. Châteaudun, Nogent-le-Rotrou, Chartres, Bonneval, Yèvres, Epernon, Orgères-en-Beauce or Toury, “Dozens of entry or exit signs were knocked down last night,” says Bertrand Petit, the president of the FNSEA 28. We defend ourselves at the national level, but we must reach the villages, so that the rumbling comes from the small communities.”

No degradation but a “simple” reversal. LP/Christophe Blondel

The “symbolic, without degradation” action was carried out by farmers who are members of JA 28 or FNSEA 28. The objective is to reverse the village signs to denounce the growing disconnection of the government with agricultural reality and denounce the normative overbidding. “GNR (non-road diesel), all the controls around phytosanitary issues, so many things are needed that in the end, we no longer know what is good or not good,” complains the union leader.

Fed up with the escalation of standards

Organic plan, protein plan, recovery plan, fruit and vegetable plan, viticulture plan, etc., these operators also point the finger at “very short-term responses” from the State. In Eure-et-Loir, the FNSEA is also indignant against the European regulation “sustainable use of pesticides” (SUR) which could concern “150,000 hectares, including 70,000 around a Natura 2000 zone in the south of the department. We cannot convert these lands to organic, when there are already difficulties in selling organic food,” says Bertrand Petit, who fears for France’s food sovereignty.

According to the demonstrators, this situation discourages young people from embarking on agricultural careers. The operation of the returned panels should remain visible for a few days, especially in small towns. In Châteaudun, the panels were put back upright at 10 a.m. this Wednesday morning.
