Check out the list of matches in which Tricolor received a champion ribbon

São Paulo faces the Fluminense team tonight (22), in Rio de Janeiro, in a delayed game of the 32nd round of the Brazilian Championship. Furthermore, in particular, the match will mark the exchange of champion belts between players from both teams.

The home team’s athletes will award the São Paulo team with Copa do Brasil champion ribbons. In turn, the people from São Paulo will honor the people from Rio with Copa Libertadores champion banners.

It is not the first time that Tricolor Paulista will receive a decoration of this type from its brother in Rio de Janeiro, or that it will offer this type of honor to its opponent: the same already occurred on June 30, 1971 and on February 6, 1986, both after winning state titles for both clubs in 1971 and 1985.

Special mentions

After some title wins there were no decorations with sashes, but with a wreath of flowers, as on April 6, 1932, against América (for Paulista in 1931) and on September 23, 1945, against Palmeiras (for Paulista in 1945). ).

On this occasion, in fact, Palmeiras displayed a large banner in honor of Tricolor through some players:

On December 15, 1946 (for the 1946 Paulista and Sastre’s farewell), there was no wreath or champion banners, but River Plate entered the field with the São Paulo flag. The board, however, held a banner delivery ceremony at the club’s headquarters, in Canindé:

And in 1975, it is not clear whether there were awards with sashes, but Forlán, who was saying goodbye to the club on September 14th, against Flamengo, was awarded a sash as the 1975 São Paulo champion – at least he, and, apparently, after the game.

Finally, on November 26, 2006, against Cruzeiro, São Paulo received the official trophy for that season’s Brasileirão title, but were not awarded any banners.

In other years and other achievements of Tricolor, there is no known record of an award of this type.

The relationship with Fluminense

The teams’ relationship began in 1930, a few months after the founding of Tricolor Paulista, in July, when, following an invitation from Fluminense, the São Paulo team visited the Laranjeiras Stadium and faced a combination of players from Fluminense and Vasco.

In the 1940s, the link between the institutions became even stronger. With the aim of evolving and adopting better administrative practices, São Paulo leaders were present at Fluminense, observed management reports and began to adopt new habits. Clearly, Fluminense, which had been a multi-sport powerhouse for a long time, influenced São Paulo leaders to follow the same path. And so, in July 1942, the first Tricolor Olympics was held: a multidisciplinary competition promoted by sister clubs with the aim of promoting sport as a whole.

Over the years, cultural or administrative exchange was just one facet of the union, considering that, for fans of both, the common idols within the four lines were the greatest proof of this closer relationship. Tim, Hércules, Gérson and, mainly, Telê Santana are examples of heroes who marked the history of both clubs.
