Ministry of Agriculture will act as coordinator of the pesticide reanalysis process and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change will be in charge of coordinating cases related to environmental control products

BRASILIA (Reuters) – The Senate Environment Committee (CMA) approved this Wednesday a bill that deals with the granting of registration and commercialization of pesticides and environmental control products, called by critics the “poison package”. The text will go to the House plenary.

Controversial, the proposal has been dividing opinions since its presentation. For environmentalists and critics, the PL relaxes the rules for authorizing the use of pesticides, harming not only the environment, but also human health.

“We continue to fight against the poison package!” said the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST) on the social network X, saying that the project “makes the release of pesticides even more flexible and facilitates the use of poisons”.

Defenders of the matter, on the other hand, argue that it simplifies the authorization process and can result in more productivity in the agricultural sector.

“We need to come together to combat the wave of Fake News about pesticides, which are so important for controlling pests and diseases that plague fields and crops in Brazil. Anyone who really knows the struggle and daily lives of rural producers knows the importance of agricultural pesticides to guarantee robust and quality production”, published the Agricultural Parliamentary Front (FPA) on the X social network.

“According to the FAO, without pesticides, we could lose up to 40% of all production, resulting in more expensive food that is less accessible to the population.”

The rapporteur of the proposal at CMA, senator Fabiano Contarato (PT-ES), decided to make it clear in the text that the Ministry of Agriculture will act as coordinator of the pesticide reanalysis process and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change will be in charge of coordination of cases related to environmental control products.
