Controls will multiply. The Paris town hall expressed Thursday its wish that the legislative arsenal be strengthened to fight against illegal tourist rentals in the run-up to the 2024 Olympics.

In the capital, it is only allowed to list your accommodation on platforms like Airbnb or Booking 120 days a year and only if it is your main residence. But the City fears that abuses will be numerous during the period of the Olympic Games (July 26-August 11), when demand in Paris is very high. “We do not want owners to get rid of their tenants in June to immediately rent on Airbnb,” warned Paris senator and councilor Ian Brossat, former deputy for Housing.

He wants a minimum period of one year to be established between the notice given to a tenant and the moment when the accommodation becomes rentable on the platforms. A measure included in a transpartisan law which will be examined on November 28 in the National Assembly.

Door-to-door operation

Controls should also increase between now and the Games, promised the delegated advisor in charge of rental platforms, Barbara Gomes. Thursday morning, sworn city agents attempted to visit 150 suspicious homes in the popular 5th arrondissement. But few tourists responded to their request.

It is this type of door-to-door operation, repeated once every two months in Paris, that communist elected officials wish to simplify, hoping that they will more frequently result in a conviction. Several amendments to the transpartisan bill will be tabled in this regard.

For the town hall, there is no question of being fiercely opposed to Airbnb. “We are in favor of owners being able, when they are absent, to rent their apartments to tourists,” assures Ian Brossat, “but we must slow down the anarchic and completely irresponsible development of a professional offer.” Between 20,000 and 30,000 homes in Paris are illegal tourist rentals, according to the City.
