Denis Mukwege formally confirms his candidacy for the presidency of the Democratic Republic of Congo, thus rejecting rumors circulating about his withdrawal in favor of another candidate, notably Moise Katumbi.
“False information is circulating on the internet alleging that Dr. Mukwege has withdrawn in favor of another candidate for the presidency of the Democratic Republic of Congo. We confirm that this information is false,” said Vital Barholere, Mukwege’s chief of staff.
“In accordance with the wishes of millions of Congolese, Dr. Mukwege is still a presidential candidate and remains open to dialogue for the nomination of a common opposition candidate. He takes this opportunity to thank the Congolese population for the warm welcome given to his Peace Plan for our country as well as their massive support for his social project,” he added.
On Sunday, former Prime Minister Matata Ponyo announced his withdrawal from the presidential race in favor of Moise Katumbi, while calling on Denis Mukwege and Delly Sesanga to follow his example.
Denis Mukwege is actively preparing for the launch of his electoral campaign with a program which will be revealed in the coming days. Meanwhile, Delly Sesanga is already established in the Kwango region to begin his campaign
