Overcrowded Prisons Affecting Swedish Families
The Swedish prison system is currently experiencing an unprecedented overflow of inmates, with a particular increase in the detention of minors aged 15 to 17. According to reports, the number of detained individuals in this age group has increased fivefold over the past three years, reaching 69 people in August of this year. Notably, the age group of 18 to 20 has also seen a significant increase in the number of detainees, rising from 198 individuals in August 2020 to 330 people in August 2023.
The surge in prison population has directly impacted families, as illustrated by the recent experience of Anna and Peter, parents of 16-year-old Lukas. When Lukas did not return home one Thursday afternoon, it sparked a distressing series of events for his parents.
