The newspaper Izvestia published a retelling of the publication of the Parisian military-bourgeois newspaper Eco de Paris on March 16, signed by Uncle Bertrand. Here’s what it says:
“New York is reporting wonderful news, news downright charming: a liquid poison has been made in the chemical laboratory of the American army, three drops of which, once on the skin of a person, kill him.
If you let this poison in the form of rain through the tubes attached to the airplane, then it will kill almost everyone who gets under this rain.
It seems to me that I have already read something similar in Wales, and I remember that during the last war we were often informed of such horrific discoveries, which should have put an immediate end to the war for lack of fighters. This reminds me of the fable of the notorious “Turpinite” in September 1914.
Scientists who patiently and persistently work on such inventions are pursuing the most magnanimous, noblest, humane goal, for every time they console themselves that in this way they will bring the war to such a degree of destructiveness that it becomes impossible.
Is it not possible, however, to try to achieve not negative results, but positive ones, that is, all that ingenuity, all that knowledge that is spent on the destruction of human life, use it to continue it?
If, for example, you could find a way to make all soldiers invulnerable, don’t you think that that would also make war impossible?
Instead of the aforementioned liquid poison, why not invent some magical liquid, three drops of which would be enough to protect a person from injury?
Still, it is a little annoying to know that three drops poured on the skin can save you from life, but they cannot get rid of rheumatism. “
