Sea levels are rising, by three to four millimeters per year. And with global warming, this increase will continue in the long term. Certainly, thanks to the protection of the coasts, tidal waves have become less dangerous than before, even despite climate change. But the challenge of continued sea level rise is growing.

Australia’s proposal to grant asylum to the inhabitants of Tuvalu in the event that their island is submerged therefore seems to be timely. “We believe that as climate change intensifies, the people of Tuvalu should have the choice to live, study and work elsewhere”we can read in a joint statement from Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his counterpart Kausea Natano.
