The government of Rio de Janeiro and the concessionaire Metrô Rio announced this Thursday (23) an agreement to resume work at the Gávea station, in the south zone of Rio, which has been suspended since 2015.

The station was scheduled to open during the 2016 Olympics, but it has not yet been completed. The station’s underground structure was flooded with 36 million liters of water to prevent the ground from becoming unstable.

The memorandum of interest for the resumption of works establishes the general guidelines that should allow line 4 to be completed and to operate along its entire length.

The proposal still needs to be approved by the Public Ministry and the TCE (State Audit Court).

According to governor Cláudio Castro (PL), the suspended works are one of the biggest challenges for urban mobility in Rio. The resumption, according to him, will unlock the development of the metro system.

“In addition to bringing improvements to transportation, the work will generate thousands of jobs,” said Castro.

Before being presented to the Public Ministry and the TCE, the memorandum must undergo adjustments until the agreement is final.

The estimate is an investment of R$600 million and the completion of works that have been stopped for eight years is expected to take 36 months, after approval of the project. In exchange, Metrô Rio will gain a ten-year extension of the concession.

The working group that reached the agreement is made up of Setram (State Secretariat for Transport and Urban Mobility), Rio Trilhos, the State Attorney General’s Office and Metrô Rio. The group analyzed legal, economic and technical issues for the resumption of works.

“Now users can have a concrete perspective on the station,” said the state secretary of Transport and Urban Mobility, Washington Reis.
