Brazil recorded its hottest temperature – 44.8C on Sunday in the town of Arasuai, in the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais.

The unprecedented weather has been attributed to the El Niño phenomenon and climate change, reports the BBC.

Forecasters say some of the heat is likely to ease this week.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), only three state capitals will see temperatures approach 40C, according to CNN Brazil.

The government agency said Araçuaí’s high temperature of 44.8C surpassed the country’s previous record of 44.7C measured in 2005.

The heat has prompted red alerts to be issued across the country, weeks before the start of summer in the southern hemisphere. Energy consumption in Brazil has jumped to record levels as people try to cool down.

High temperatures forced Taylor Swift to cancel one of her concerts in Rio de Janeiro after a fan fell ill and died before Friday’s concert.

According to the organizers, 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides Machado sought help at the stadium after feeling ill. She was taken to hospital but died an hour later.

Scientists say heat waves are getting longer and more intense in many places, and are expected to continue as long as humans continue to emit planet-warming greenhouse gases.
