In a world immersed in profound transformations, accelerated by geopolitical conflicts, Aragon plays a leading role in a “state issue” such as energy, a “cross-cutting” issue at a political, social and economic level. Thanks to being one of the territories “most excellent” in renewables, The autonomous community has become the “spearhead” of the ecological transition and energy sovereignty to which Spain and the European Union (EU) aspire. Achieving this objective is also strategic for national security as seen “with Putin’s gas blackmail” and the imbalances that this triggered in the old continent.

This was highlighted this Friday in Villanueva de Gállego (Zaragoza) the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albaresduring the closing of the Sella Forum International Conference on innovation in energy management in the industry, organized by the Industry and Energy Forum with the support of the CEOE of Aragon, the Energy Cluster of Aragon, the University of Zaragoza, R&A Comunicación and Opinion360.

“For the first time in our history, “Spain is in a position to work to achieve real energy autonomy.”, stated the minister, a priority challenge after the “shocks to which we have been forced and which were unthinkable” until some time ago, he said in reference to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the war between Israel and Hamas. “All this leads us to become aware that this It is the right time to make those transformations and Spain is leading them within the EU,” he added.

In this context, he believes that Aragón has great opportunities due to the competitiveness of energy prices that it offers to companies thanks to a “very extensive development in renewables” that makes it be at the “avant-garde” of this sector at a national and European level. This helps, he stressed, his “privileged geostrategic situation” and the good electrical communications it has with Catalonia, the Basque Country or the Valencian Community, as well as the “international connection capacity” through the Pyrenees.

A privileged land for the sustainability of the data industry

“We must continue investing in energy networks,” Albares stressed, which will allow Aragón to “attract investments”, create more qualified employment and achieve the implementation of more companies in their logistics platforms. The minister also praised the “great human capital” that the community has thanks to large companies such as Stellantis o Amazonwho “need clean and economical energy at a fixed and reasonable price”, something that this land offers.

“There will be no climate revolution without the climate transition of the industry,” he stressed. At this point, he explained that if the data industry were considered a country, it would be the fifth most polluting in the world, but “there are solutions.” If these “indispensable to our lives” companies are located in Aragon, they can reduce their carbon footprint “directly” by more than 80% and, in some cases, up to 100% thanks to the availability of renewable energy. ““This in Europe can only be offered by Spain with Aragon as the spearhead,” he concluded.
