On paper, the campaign for the European elections in June 2024 has not started. Much too early, we hear on the left. The parties are hesitant to open hostilities between them for this election which will be the first to materialize at the polls the end of the alliance of the New Ecological and Social Popular Union (Nupes).
Raphaël Glucksmann does not have these prejudices. “Mélenchon has crossed all the red lines”estimates the candidate declared since September, for whom the founder of La France insoumise (LFI) is in a “total drift”. “There was no way to make a list with LFI, to silence the deep differences that separate us from Jean-Luc Mélenchon”he explains to Mondeadding that he had learned the lessons of 2019. No more, said the candidate, “endless meetings” to attempt an alliance with the Greens. With the Socialist Party (PS), whose list he led in 2019, the founder of Place publique took the lead by launching well before the socialist designation, expected for February. The more the weeks pass, the more the idea that he will return takes root at the PS. “It’s obvious that Raphaël Glucksmann is the right head of the list”says his colleague in the European Parliament Christophe Clergeau.
Four years have passed since the 6.2% of his list. At the time, many in the PS criticized their first secretary, Olivier Faure, for having chosen« effacement » leaving the list to this non-member. They are now less rebellious. The socialist president of the Occitanie region, Carole Delga, salutes her struggles “humanists” and for the right of peoples to self-determination.
“Do better” than in 2019
The person concerned, sometimes slightly ahead to the left in polls which mainly give first place to the National Rally, hopes ” do better “ than in 2019. “Even I wasn’t ready. This mandate has profoundly changed me, transformed me, I know what to say, how to carry it”he says, hoping “a much better campaign and a much better result”. On the kitchen side, negotiations with a view to a PS-Public Square political agreement are underway; They are currently stuck on the composition of the list. Christophe Clergeau notes that there will be no “automatism” on the outgoing square, another executive indicates that the place of the European deputy Public square Aurore Lalucq will be ” a debate “.

Basically, the PS and Place publique agree on the strategy to be followed: to generate a useful vote to swell the ranks of the group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament against the right of the European People’s Party. Also agree to bring the debate to moral ground in a geopolitical context marked by the war in Ukraine and the relaunch of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “This is the first time that the European continent will vote while we are in a war situation”insists Raphaël Glucksmann, for whom the vote of June 9 “must be that of political surprise, a demonstration that the dominant force on the left is pro-European”.
