New Treatment Option Discovered for Skin Cancer Metastases
Scientists at MedUni Vienna have made a breakthrough discovery in the fight against skin cancer. Their research has led to the development of a new treatment option aimed at preventing the formation of metastases in melanoma cells.
The study, which was published in the specialist journal “PNAS”, could potentially pave the way for the development of a new class of drugs to combat this aggressive form of skin cancer. According to a press release from the university, the new treatment targets the ability of melanoma cells to metastasize and could be a game-changer in the fight against cutaneous melanoma.
Lead researchers, Wolfgang Weninger and Shweta Tikoo, explained that the treatment works by thwarting invadopodia and F-actins – cellular structures and proteins that cancer cells use to invade surrounding tissue. The researchers used a screening called “Invasion Block” to examine 4,000 already approved substances for their ability to prevent tumor spread, and identified kinase inhibitors as promising therapeutics.
“Existing therapeutic measures are still not effective in many cases,” the researchers stated, highlighting the high mortality rate associated with this type of cancer. They also emphasized the need for medications that directly target the ability of melanoma cells to metastasize, due to the limited effectiveness of current treatments and the presence of side effects and resistance.
