In the homes. Milan interiors 1928-1978 (Hoepli) a 50-year journey inside 220 famous homes in Milan. The signatures of Caccia Dominioni, Portaluppi, Gio Ponti: a postcard of style between images, plans and sketches

There are those who say that a good way to understand Milan is to enter an old house. Old in the sense of the year of construction. Very modern, almost futuristic, indeed, if you think about the design of its interiors. The latest hunt for this kind of treasures is a journey lasting 50 years and 220 houses divided into 55 themes, which, as the authors say, are only interpretative hypotheses. In the homes. Milan interiors 1928-1978, just released by Hoepli, a secret journey because not everyone likes to open doors to share their special aesthetics.

Enrico Morteo, architect but also critic and historian of design, and Orsina Simona Pierini, professor of architectural and urban composition at the Polytechnic of Milan, worked on it. They dug through archives and libraries. Browsed magazines. Transformed, renovated houses. Because even the best things change. But the imprint remains. Inside there are not only photos, but also floor plans, drawings and sketches, which are the pure essence of architecture. And they are a way to feel there, alongside those legendary names of Milanese design. In that very inspiring period, from the Second World War onwards. Chatting on a sofa or peeking at the desk of that golden generation made up of Luigi Caccia Dominioni, Piero Portaluppi, Gio Ponti, Joe Colombo, Nanda Vigo or Franco Albini.

A pantheon more recognized elsewhere, studied in foreign universities as a very chic niche in a Milan with a golden pencil. There is all the evolution of style, social and cultural, the artistic mixes, of a city that was not just for drinking. An intimate point of view as the Milanese like, not at all blatant and in many ways still misunderstood. But Milano interiors is a collection that goes beyond Milan (the two presentations, at Villa Necchi and Triennale, were totally sold out), a massive postcard to travel around the world (it is no coincidence that it was conceived in the original language but also in English). A mirror to understand the evolution of the times. The black and white shots throw you back into history, while in color there is all the modernity of houses that are still very relevant today. Because good taste doesn’t age, you just need to understand it. And fortunately not for everyone.
