There are more and more underwater robots. Many perform scientific tasks and it is these that the public knows best. However, there are also robots of this type in the military field. It is foreseeable that their main task will be to inspect the maritime environment for possible security threats, although other tasks cannot be ruled out. The photo shows one of these elusive military underwater robots. This is a testing prototype being worked on by DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, dependent on the United States Department of Defense) and the companies Northrop Grumman and PacMar Technologies. Compared to previous similar robots, this new generation is expected to be more energy efficient, able to spend more time at sea on each outing, have a longer lifespan and be more intelligent.
