It is at the Tréan crossroads, at the foot of the Beaux-Monts belvedere in Compiègne (Oise), that animal photographers aware of the cause of deer in national forests have called for a demonstration against the Office’s “slaughter policy”. national forestry (ONF), this Saturday. Around fifty defenders of the animal cause, residents of forest villages and enthusiasts of the massif came together to make their voices heard. Similar regroupings in the Chaux forest, in the Jura, and in Mormal, in the North, took place simultaneously.

This year, following nighttime counts deemed satisfactory, the ONF increased the hunting plan for deer, does and brockets by 20%, thus awarding 342 bracelets to hunters, who rent the fifteen hunting plots in the 14,400 ha of the forest of Compiègne. An aberration for these nature observers, who have surveyed the massif since their childhood and who only see the king of the forest on rare occasions.

“I see more plastic waste than animals”

“The ONF counted animals in the borders, animals that live in another massif. They deliberately inflated the figures,” says Michael Noirot, spokesperson for forest photographers. A fact that Jérôme Jaminon, the director of the ONF in Compiègne, refuted on Friday.

Compiègne, this Saturday. Two similar events were held in the Chaux (Jura) and Mormal (North) massifs.

“I learned to walk in the forest. My father was a wildlife photographer. When we were little, we got up at 6 a.m. to see the animals. As soon as we arrived, we saw the deer crossing the road. In the 1990s, we went to Morienval, to Four d’en Haut, we were sure to find some. I remember seeing herds of deer of more than 150 individuals in some places, but now it’s over. The ONF no longer wants deer in the forest,” laments Jimmy, 39 years old.

Édouard, 44, has the same feeling. “I’m in the forest several times a week and I have my places to see the deer. Honestly, I’m not the only one having trouble finding them. We are moving towards eradication. I see more plastic waste and cans than animals. »

Angélique came from Pierrefonds. As a resident of a pasture where deer have their habits, she was shocked not to have been warned in March of two scaring raids organized by the ONF. “Neither is the town hall!” In fact, they were pushed into the national forest so that they could be killed! »

For the ONF, it is just a matter of achieving the fauna-flora balance. “The deer has its place but it is harmful to young plants and thus prevents the regeneration of the forest which is suffering from global warming,” explained Jérôme Jaminon, before this Saturday’s demonstration. If we let it happen, it will not be renewed. »
