Hamas announces delay in releasing hostages “until Israel respects agreement”

Further releases of Hamas hostages and Palestinian prisoners expected on Saturday, November 25. Qatar is to announce how many are to be released today. Israeli authorities announced that they had received the list of hostages concerned, but did not specify the expected time of their release.The truce in fighting between Israel and Hamas came into effect on Friday November 24 at 7 a.m. local time (6 a.m. Paris time), and 24 hostages were released: 13 Israelis, 10 Thais and 1 Filipino. Among the Israeli hostages are 4 children, including one aged 2, and 6 women over 70 years old.Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, said that he and his government were “determined to bring back all [les] hostages.” The Israeli army estimates that around 240 people were kidnapped by the armed Islamist movement on October 7.Thirty-nine Palestinian prisoners, women and minors, were released from prison on Friday by Israeli authorities in exchange for Israeli hostages released by Hamas, the Prisoners’ Club, an NGO which defends Palestinian prisoners, reported to Agence France-Presse (AFP) on Friday, confirming an announcement from Qatar earlier in the day.The agreement reached Wednesday between the Israeli government and the Islamist group provides for the exchange of fifty women and children detained by Hamas against Palestinian prisoners, as well as“a lull in the fighting” for four days.France welcomed the release of the first hostages in a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. “France is mobilized for the release of French hostages within the framework of the agreement currently being implemented”, explains the short text.
