“I feel that there was no other way, first of all for reasons of political distrust and disagreement,” said the now independent MP, Nasos Iliopoulos, speaking to “MEGA Weekend” about the reasons for his departure and the latest developments in SYRIZA.

“It was by no means an easy decision. It is not easy to leave a space you have served for over 20 years, I feel there was no other way for a number of reasons: first of all political distrust and dissent. That is, a new leadership which within 20 days said three different things about some basic issues”.

“I remind Mr. Kasselakis’ position on BSE, the completely different one on the Economist and the third different one in his interview with MEGA and with Nikos Evagelatos on very key issues,” he noted.

“A second is the violent ‘conservatization’ of SYRIZA on very central issues, but also the third and crucial, the logic of the ‘internal enemy’. That is, anyone who goes to express a disagreement within SYRIZA is treated as an internal enemy or fifth phalanx. 4 polls have already come out and they show SYRIZA as the third party. there is a vacuum in the opposition at the moment, a deterioration and discredit, PASOK is stuck and cannot win anything, and there is a real vacuum in the opposition in the Mitsotakis government. The move we are making is a move of responsibility, it is an ambitious goal, but we believe that this is what is needed at this moment”, added Mr. Iliopoulos regarding the reasons for leaving SYRIZA.

“We will not enter into a civil war”

Regarding the words and attitude of Stefanos Kasselakis towards Efi Ahtsioglou and those who left, he emphasized that yesterday’s post and “the vulgarity of the attack” by Stefanos Kasselakis on Efi Ahtsioglou confirms the reasons why they left.

“In politics, it’s not all positions and positions, there are principles and values”

“Mr. Kasselakis mentions in his post that ‘I offered them positions and positions and they did not accept’. First of all they should decide what their line is. Secondly, they should understand that in politics it is not all positions and positions, there are principles and values. A political space that will go to SEV and defend purely neoliberal views, I cannot defend it. In a political space where I have no right to say that there is a wrong course”.

“There is no elected leadership that measures quality to compete with Mr. Velopoulos, this is a real problem that the leadership team refuses to see and discuss. We will under no circumstances enter into a civil war with SYRIZA or Mr. Kasselakis. It’s not about us or anyone. We say there is a vacuum in the opposition. Neither SYRIZA nor PASOK fill this gap and we want to fill it. A void for the left, progressive world that is suffocating within the Mitsotakis regime. We saw the vulgar statement of Panos Tsakloglou yesterday”, he added regarding the new page and the creation of a new party.

For the head of the new party, Mr. Iliopoulos underlined that “within the next few days we will form our KO. What is crucial for us is to confront the government in the debate on the budget, to confront the economic model, the labor issues and the issues facing Greek society as a whole. in the second year we will open the debate on the European elections and on the formation of a new body”.

Tsipras managed to form the Left government – The election result was a shock for us

The role of Alexis Tsipras

According to Nasos Iliopoulos, “whatever happens to me, Alexis Tsipras will be the first person I met in 2001 when I joined the youth of the Coalition, as secretary, and he is the person who managed to make the Left a government in country and to leave behind a great work at the economic, social and national level. I remind you of the Prespa agreement that shows how you can win against Turkey’s revisionist policy. I respect the choice of Mr. Tsipras after the elections, which was a shock for us the election result”

Among other things, Mr. Iliopoulos was positioned regarding possible collaborations of the new KO, which is to be created in the next few days.

“First of all we have to talk about the content. We are not close to PASOK in any case, it has huge responsibilities. PASOK showed that it does not believe in partnerships and it was shown by the simple analogy. We are a country that this year alone has 160 deaths in workplaces. It’s a scary number. In this country the ND brought the 13-hour clock. In that bill, the PASOK forces did not even declare a 24-hour strike,” he said characteristically.

As for the goals of the new political entity, Mr. Iliopoulos said:

“Obviously, we will have to be counted in the European elections as well. We need time until we form the KO. We insist on the political vacuum, if this vacuum did not exist Mr. Tsakloglou would not be a minister after his statements yesterday. Is the government detaining Mr. Tsakloglou after the statement ‘let the lawyer go and become a delivery man’? The government can keep Mr. Tsakloglou – for the statement in question – and Mr. Georgiadis – for Tempi – precisely because it does not feel the pressure of the opposition. We have not had time to come up with the name of the new party. Mr. Alexis Haritsis is a very likely name, he is one of the persons who can serve this new goal, but no decision has been made yet,” concluded Mr. Iliopoulos.
