The time to buy Christmas Lottery tickets has already begun and in less than a month, on December 22, the Extraordinary Christmas Draw will be held. Millions of people in our country acquire these papers every year with the hope that a prize will fall into their hands, especially the long-awaited “Gordo”, which rewards its winners with 400,000 euros per tenth.

This is a tradition rooted in Spanish homes, since the Christmas lottery has been distributing prizes since 1812 in reales, escudos, pesetas and, now, euros. The cost of the first tenth was 40 reais, which would be equivalent to 10 pesetas or 0.06 euros, compared to the 20 euros it currently costs, as explained on the Bankinter blog. Almost 60 years later, this tenth began to cost 50 pesetas, that is, about 0.30 euros, and the prize reached the figure of 150,000 pesetas, which is equivalent to about 900 euros. Already in the 20th century, in 1920, buying a tenth cost almost 100 pesetas, so the Christmas Lottery barely reached one euro (0.60 euros). And it has been since 2002 that this draw has been held in euros.

This year there are 2,590 million euros in prizes at stake, which will be distributed as follows:

The first prize, also known as the “Gordo” is the most important in the draw. This is endowed with 400,000 euros per tenth, that is, 4 million euros for the series – made up of 10 tenths. The second prize distributes 125,00 euros per tenth, that is, 1,250,000 euros for the series – made up of 10 tenths. –.The third prize is endowed with 50,000 euros per tenth, 500,000 euros for the series. The two fourth prizes distribute 20,000 euros to the tenth in the draw (200,000 euros for the series). The eight fifth prizes are endowed with 6,000 euros for the tenth That is, 60,000 euros for the series. The pedreas distribute prizes of 100 euros per tenth, 1,000 for the series.

Likewise, the numbers before and after the “Gordo” will be awarded 2,000 euros per tenth, those before and after the second prize will receive 1,250 per tenth and in the case of the third prize, those who have the ticket with the numbers before and after This will be awarded with 960 euros.

The hundreds of the first, second, third and fourth prize will receive 100 euros per tenth, as will those who have the last two figures of the first, second and third prize. The less fortunate winners will receive a refund, 20 euros per tenth, thus recovering the total amount.

The Treasury will also be rewarded in this year’s draw, since all those who receive prizes of more than 40,000 euros must pay 20% of the total amount received less the exempt amount. Therefore, if a third prize is received, which is 50,000 euros, the tax base will rise to 10,000 euros. The rate that will be applied to the tax base will be 20%. Therefore, in the previously mentioned example the full fee would be 2,000 euros (50,000 euros of the prize amount – 40,000 euros exempt = 10,000 tax base x 20% tax rate = 2,000 euros). In the case of those awarded the second prize – 125,000 euros per tenth –, they will deliver 17,000 euros to the Treasury.
