WHO/European Region has announced the creation of a Youth Network on Alcohol that aims to use the knowledge and experience of young people to promote a strategic agenda and develop an action plan for the benefit of this population group.

In the WHO European Region, alcohol is responsible for 1 in 4 deaths among people aged 20 to 24 years, mainly due to injuries and violence. It also contributes to more than 200 diseases, health conditions and types of injuries, including at least seven types of cancer.

In this regard, the UN Health Agency considers that the participation of young people can ensure that interventions are adapted to the target group and that they take responsibility for their own well-being, in addition to providing them with a sense of trust and credibility within community.

This is why WHO/European Region has announced the creation of a Youth Network on Alcohol that aims to use the knowledge and experience of young people to promote a strategic agenda. This Network will allow young people between 18 and 30 years old to form a dynamic working group and develop an action plan that will have a real impact. Their efforts will drive transformative change in drinking cultures and reduce the harms caused by alcohol to their peers and future generations.

The Youth Network becomes part of its EVID-ACTION project (WHO and EU Evidence in Action on Alcohol Project). Among its objectives, it is worth highlighting the development of an evidence base to support the implementation of effective health warnings about alcohol, with a specific focus on cancer risks, not in vain, alcohol consumption can cause at least seven types of cancer, including the most common ones such as colorectal cancer and breast cancer in women.

Likewise, the aim is to strengthen knowledge and the exchange of experiences between countries, as well as to support their commitment to protecting health interests in the development and implementation of alcohol policies.

Added to this is supporting collaboration between countries in the development of regulations and public health communications on the links between alcohol consumption and cancer risks, and options to reduce them; and provide practical technical tools and training to support the implementation of evidence-based screening and brief interventions in primary health care, workplace, and social service contexts.
